Landmark Stages
In Defiance County, the buildings that defined our communities generations ago serve as centers for the performing arts today. Originally constructed as part of Defiance High School in the 1920s, the Defiance Community Auditorium serves as venue for various musical and theatrical performances, including the Fort Defiance Players.
The 192-seat Stroede Center for the Arts was constructed in 1846 as the First Baptist Church — then-Gov. William McKinley was on hand as the cornerstone was laid. After the congregation vacated the building in 1980, the building was donated to the Defiance Community Cultural Council (DCCC) in 2007. Today, it’s home to the Defiance Community Cultural Council (DCCC) and Defiance Community Television (DCTV). Dedicated to providing Defiance County with great art through professional video, lighting, and sound, the Stroede Center is a perfect venue for recitals, presentations, and weddings. Regular community events include the Tuttle’s Town and Gown Series, performances by the Young People’s Theatre Guild, and the classical music series Sunday at the Stroede.
Built as Mackey’s Brick Hotel in 1895, the Huber Opera House and Civic Center in Hicksville became the tryout theater for George H. Huber’s larger New York and Chicago theaters. After many years of housing different businesses, the nostalgic feel of the Huber has been restored by a group of determined citizens. With a seating capacity of 800, the Huber Opera House is used for many community events and attractions and is home to the Hicksville Village Players.
